Valpoi gets new chairperson and vice-chairperson

VALPOI: As expected, Sahazin Shaikh and Anil Katkar were on Thursday elected unopposed as chairperson and vice chairperson respectively at the Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC).

At a special meeting, Shaikh and Katkar were the only candidates to file their nominations and they were declared elected unopposed by Bicholim Deputy Collector Deepak Vaigankar, who was assisted by VMC Chief Officer Dashrath Gawas.

All other councillors -- Ramadas Shirodkar, Vinod Haldankar Prasanna Gawas, Idrus Sheikh, Sharafat Khan, Nirmala Sakhalkar, Sarfaraz Syed and Vaciuddin Sheikh -- were present at the meeting.

Later speaking to reporters, newly elected chairperson Sahazin Shaikh said focus would be on all round development of Valpoi town, with the assistance of the local MLA.

“Some works are pending from the last council which will be completed during my tenure.”

When asked, she confirmed that her tenure would be for two-and-half year as part of a mutual agreement, before Prassana Gawas will take over as chairperson for an equal duration, as the post has been reserved for women.

Responding to a query on traffic congestion in Valpoi town, the VMC chairperson assured to resolve the issue on priority as it has been a burning issue since the last few years.

“I appeal to all people of Valpoi to support newly elected council to enable us develop the town,” she said.

Newly elected VMC Vice Chairperson Anil Katkar also spoken on the occasion.

Falari heads Bicholim civic 
body, Gaonkar his deputy


BICHOLIM: The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) got its new chairperson and vice-chairperson, when Kundan Falari and Tanuja Gaonkar were elected unopposed to the two posts respectively.

At a special meeting in the BMC hall, Falari and Gaonkar were the only candidates to file their nominations in the 14-member council.

All councillors, Kundan Falari, Tanuja Gaonkar, Nilesh Tople, Adv Aparna Fogueri, Deepa Shirgsonkar, Deepa Pal, Aniket Chanekar, Rajaram Gaonkar, Sudan Govekar, Sukhada Teli, Pandurang Korgaonkar, Adv Rajana Vayangankar, Riyaz Beig and Vijaykumar Natekar, were present and also took the oath as newly elected councillors.

Speaking to reporters after his election as BMC chairperson, Falari assured to work for the development of Bicholim town with the support of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar and all councillors.

He said a cleanliness drive, garbage management, traffic management and other projects would be taken on priority.

On the occasion, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar congratulated the newly elected councillors and pledged his support to the development of Bicholim town.

Pernem: Usha, Manoj take 
oath as chairperson & dy 


PERNEM: Usha Nagvekar and Manoj Harmalkar were elected unopposed as chairperson and vice-chairperson respectively at the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC) on Thursday.

At a special meeting in the PMC hall, Pernem Deputy Collector Ravishankar Nipanikar also administered the oath to the councillors, Usha Nagvekar, Manoj Harmalkar, Trupti Sawal Desai, Madhav Sinai Desai, Rakhi Kashalkar, Ashwini Palienkar, Vishakha Gadekar, Siddhesh Pednekar, Vishnu Salgaonkar and Shivram Tukoji.

Speaking to reporters, newly elected PMC Chairperson Usha Nagvekar acknowledged that while her voters, the BJP and former PMC chairperson Vasudev Deshprabhu had brought her into politics, her success in the PMC was mainly due to Deputy Chief Minister and Pernem MLA Babu Ajgaonkar.

“It is because of Ajgaonkar that I have been able to become PMC chairperson for the second time," said Nagvekar.

Ajgaonkar later greeted the chairperson and deputy chairperson in the presence of all PMC councillors.

Others who also greeted the chairperson and deputy chairperson included former PMC chairperson Narayan Mayekar, former ZP member Ramesh Sawal and Sarpanch Santosh Malik.
