The sorry state of the Cuncolim Freedom Fighters’ Memorial near the bus stand has sparked outrage amongst the citizens.
Terming the state of affairs as outrageous and unacceptable, a citizen Vijay Prabhu said the wall of the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial in Cuncolim — a sacred symbol of sacrifice, courage, and our proud history — has been defaced with unknown markings and left unattended for over a week.
“Where is the Cuncolim Municipal Council? Where is the local MLA and Leader of Opposition,” he demanded to know, adding ‘they are unaware — which reflects sheer incompetence — or they are deliberately ignoring it, which is far worse’.
He said the memorial represents the blood and sacrifice of our freedom fighters. “Allowing it to remain vandalised and neglected is nothing short of disrespect, discrimination, and betrayal of their legacy. For Cuncolkars, this place is not just a structure — it is sacred. Seeing it treated with such apathy and arrogance has deeply hurt the sentiments of the people,” he added.
Prabhu has strongly demand that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant immediately take cognizance of this disgrace and direct the authorities to clean the defacement without delay; investigate those responsible and fix accountability on officials who failed in their duty.
“If a Freedom Fighters’ Memorial can be ignored for days, one must ask — do the sacrifices of our martyrs matter to those in power anymore,” he said.
