Issues plaguing the animal lovers running the Margao dog shelter and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme seem far from over.

The monsoons saw the dog shelter inundated with floodwater after water entered the shelter due to the failure of government agencies to restore the road leading to the shelter, which was dug up to lay a public utility line.

Tuesday saw a vehicle driven by a veterinary doctor get stuck in the trench while returning after attending to a call at the dog shelter. The doctor escaped without injuries but left the vehicle damaged due to the lack of a proper motorable road, which was damaged to lay the line.

“How are the animal lovers supposed to take the ABC programme forward when the government agencies, including the Margao Municipal Council, do not extend cooperation?” wondered an animal lover.

Over a year ago, the Margao Municipal Council had inked an agreement with a city-based NGO to carry out the ABC programme in the commercial capital. The NGO, however, has been complaining that the civic body has been dragging its feet on releasing the payments.

“The government agencies should at least get the road repaired and restored so that vehicles can ply to and fro to the dog shelter to carry out the activities,” remarked a dog lover.
