President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and Archbishop of Goa Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão has appealed for prayers, penance and solidarity in churches across India, seeking peace and safety for those affected by the conflict in the Middle East.
In a message to archbishops, bishops, priests, deacons, religious and the faithful of the Latin Catholic Church in India, Cardinal Ferrão said the suffering caused by war and instability deeply affects the human family.
He noted that many Indians live and work in countries across the Middle East and support their families back home. He said special prayers should be offered for their safety, security and well-being during this time of uncertainty.
Referring to the recent escalation of hostilities involving Iran and neighbouring countries, Cardinal Ferrão invited the entire Latin Church in India to unite in prayer for peace.
He has asked that Sunday, March 8, be observed as a Day of Prayer for Peace, with special prayers during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Intentions may also be included in the Prayer of the Faithful for the end of hostilities, protection of innocent lives and wisdom among world leaders.
Cardinal Ferrão has also encouraged the faithful to pray the Holy Rosary for peace from March 8 to March 14, seeking the intercession of Our Lady, Queen of Peace.
In addition, he has called for a day of fasting and prayer on Friday, March 13 for world peace and the safety of those affected by violence.
