Malfunctioning of the birth and death certificates section in the Salcete Sub Registrar’s office has come back to haunt Shastikars again.
Issuance of birth and death certificates from the office of the Salcete Sub-Registrar office came to a halt on Wednesday, inconveniencing Shastikars who had visited the office with the hope of laying their hands on the documents.
When citizens went to the Sub Registrar’s office on Wednesday, they found to their shock and surprise that there was no staff around to attend to the public. No applications were received from the citizens for the birth certificates, nor there was anyone around to issue the documents.
When the citizens checked up with the Sub Registrar’s office to shed light on the office malfunctioning, they pointed out that the staff on duty has not reported for work on Wednesday.
A citizen Cedric Da Costa told The Goan that he had gone to the Sub Registrar with the hope of laying his hands on old birth documents, but had to return home disappointed for want of staff in the office. “It was shocking that there was no staff to attend to the public. This is a height of irresponsibility. Action ought to be initiated by the heads of departments to streamline the office functioning," he said.
Functioning of the Salcete Sub Registrar’s office handling birth and death certificates section have gone haywire since the last couple of months, thanks to the war between the department of Registration and Planning and Statistics.
Matters came to a halt some months back when the department of Planning and Statistics withdrew the staff drafted for the work of issuing birth and death certificates on grounds that the work falls in the domain of the Sub Registrar. On the other hand, the Sub Registrar office had declined to spare any staff to man the birth and death documents on the plea that the department is understaffed.
