MARGAO

Congress turncoats from Salcete, Minister Alexio Sequeira and Digmabar Kamat, besides Independent Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco virtually kept their fingers crossed and preferred to wait for the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to do the talking on June 4 on BJP’s prospects in the Nuvem, Margao and  Curtorim Assembly segments.

While Congress-turned-BJP MLA Digambar Kamat said he only expects a good lead in Margao, Salcete lone Minister Aleixo Sequeira said he and his workers had done their best and have left it to the voters to decide.

Independent Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, on the other hand, maintained that he had supported the BJP in the Lok sabha electin since he was indebted to the Chief Minister for ushering development works in Curtoroim constituency.

Alexio Sequeira, Digambar Kamat and Reginaldo Lourenco have been the BJP’s key players as the ruling party made a determined bid to storm the Congress bastion in minority Salcete.

Digambar Kamat, who had set a target of 10,000 vote lead for the Pallavi Dempo in Margao, has exuded confidence that Madgavkars will give maximum lead to the BJP. He, however, hastened to add he cannot say whether he would be able to achieve the 10,000 vote target in Margao, saying the vote lead in Margao would all depend on the voter turnout.

In fact, Kamat said he had set the 10,000 vote lead target in Margao  to motivate and charge the workers and supporters to work hard for the success of the party candidate.

Though Kamat had in the past enjoyed the support of the minorities, including the Christians and Muslims, political observers do not rule out the possibility of the seven time Margao MLA losing sizeable vote of the minorities after his return to the BJP fold.

Salcete BJP lone Minister Aleixo Sequeira told the media after the first few hours of polling that he had been expecting around 7000-8000 votes for Pallavi Dempo.

He, however, lamented there have been concerted attempts to misguide and misinform the voters and to instill fear in the voters about the BJP. “We had worked hard for the BJP. Now, let us all wait for the EVMs to open on June 4”, he said.

Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco explained that he had lent his support the BJP candidate because of the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who had initiated development works in Curtorim.

“The BJP leadership and the Chief Minister knows my predicament in Curtorim. And, they have requested me to do my best to get votes for Pallavi”, he said, while virtually leaving it on the voters to take a call on voting the candidate of their choice.
