MARGAO
The battle for Guirdolim further intensified on the last day of campaigning, with Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao leaving nothing to chance in the wake of the BJP’s campaign led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to retain the seat.
Addressing a public meeting at Balli along with Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa and Guirdolim Congress candidate Sanjay Velip, Yuri charged that the BJP used government machinery and other means to intimidate and woo voters, but said vigilant people would not fall prey to their tactics.
“BJP is baffled to see the support our candidate has received. They have tried with all their might to divide votes, intimidate voters and lure them in many ways. But our voters have self-respect and they know how the BJP has ruined Goa; hence, they will not vote for them,” Alemao said.
Quepem MLA Altone also expressed confidence that Velip will win the seat, saying he has good qualities and a strong connect with the people.
“Our candidate has been in social work for the many years and he has proved himself. I am confident that he will win this seat with a thumping majority,” Altone D’Costa said.
He also lambasted political opponents for humiliating Velip over his simple lifestyle. “Our opponents have no right to target him over his lifestyle. He is a simple man, working hard to make ends meet for his family. He is not into illegal businesses like matka or gambling, on which some have made assets even outside the State,” Altone lashed out.
