The Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA), led by convenor Sabina Martins, has announced a protest at Azad Maidan on December 19 to demand accountability from the State government following the devastating Arpora nightclub fire at Birch by Romeo Lane, which claimed 25 lives.
Addressing a press conference at Azad Maidan on Sunday, Martins and fellow activists accused the government and administration of “abject failure” in checking blatant illegalities that, they said, directly contributed to the tragedy.
“This was not an accident -- it was a man-made disaster born of negligence and complicity,” Martins declared, adding that the protest would also serve as a solemn tribute to the victims.
“We will honour the 25 lives lost, and remind the authorities that every victim is a reminder of their dereliction of duty,” Martins said.
The GBA pointed to lapses in licensing, fire safety, and enforcement, alleging that the nightclub operated despite repeated complaints and violations.
“Who is responsible for allowing such blatant illegality? What sort of day-to-day administration are you running” asked one activist.
The Arpora blaze, among the worst fire disasters in Goa, has already prompted a magisterial inquiry and arrests of club staff. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has promised action, but civil society groups argue that systemic failures remain unaddressed.
With the Zilla Panchayat elections scheduled for December 20, the timing of the protest adds political weight. Opposition parties have echoed calls for accountability, while the ruling BJP-MGP alliance insists investigations are underway.
For the GBA, however, the focus is squarely on governance.
“This is about the safety of Goans and the integrity of our institutions. We cannot allow profit and politics to override public welfare,” Martins said.
The December 19 protest is expected to draw activists, residents, and civil society groups, setting the stage for a high-profile confrontation between citizens and the government.
