Goa’s April road accident toll: 198 crashes, 26 lives lost

PANAJI: The concerning trend of road accidents continue with Goa registering 198 accidents last month. 

The Directorate of Transport’s monthly report states that among the total, 24 were fatal accidents killing 26 victims - 12 in North Goa and 14 in South Goa.

Of the 26 victims, 17 were riders (9 in North Goa and 8 in South Goa), 4 were pillion riders (all from South Goa), and 5 were pedestrians (3 in North Goa and 2 in South Goa).

The report further mentioned that there were 15 grievous accidents, with 7 in North Goa and 8 in South Goa. A total of 17 sustained serious injuries in these accidents. 

Minor accidents totalled 43, including 13 in North Goa and 30 in South Goa. Additionally, 116 non-injury accidents were reported, 51 in North Goa and 65 in South Goa.

 A total of 76 others suffered minor injuries, including 18 in North Goa and 58 in South Goa.

The data comes at a time when Director General of Police Alok Kumar said road accident deaths in Goa have outnumbered murders. Addressing the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week on Tuesday, he also announced a target to reduce road fatalities by 20 percent in 2025, stressing that behavioural change is key to achieving it.
