A house was partially gutted in a fire at Bharvanwada-Camurlim in the wee hours of Monday.

The incident took place as the house owner, Priya Chodankar, woke up at about 5.30 am after realising the house was full of smoke.

She noticed the fridge on fire and she immediately woke up her children and moved them out of the house to a safe place, while neighbours alerted the fire station.

The fridge is believed to have caught fire due to a short circuit and the fire also damaged the mixer, oven, fan, doors and other electrical appliances in the kitchen. The fire did not cause any damage to the gas cylinder.

A fire tender led by fire officer Ashok Parab rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. While firefighters saved property worth Rs 5 lakh, goods worth Rs 1.5 lakh were damaged in the fire.
