Subtly diving into the India vs Bharat debate, Goa governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on the weekend underscored the relevance of re-building India as "Bharat" for the ethos it stands for.
Pillai who was speaking at the SDM Law College auditorium in Mangaluru on a legal subject spiced his speech with current political jargon saying the legacy of Bharat’s civilisation and its growth as a democracy can be proudly projected as the nation's march to becoming a ‘Vishwaguru’ (world leader).
Pillai's speech was themed on the growth of India's Constitutional jurisprudence with reference to ‘Keshavananda Bharathi Judgement', the landmark 1973 judgement of the Supreme Court of India which laid the basic structure doctrine.
“The need of the hour is that we must rebuild India as ‘Bharat’ for what it stands for. Value based politics, along with nation building efforts by all wings of the Constitution namely executive, legislature and judiciary; are bound to work hard for achieving the goal of the Nation,” Pillai was quoted as saying by the local Mangaluru media.
Pillai underscored the need for debate and productive discourse to build a strong society through the current turbulent decade.
He also abhorred the trend of looking to the West for ideas even as he said there was nothing wrong in borrowing ideas from other countries.
He however said India may not be adherent to the 'look West' policy while dealing with the Constitution and our laws.
The event was hosted by the SDM Law College in association with the Mangaluru Bar Association and the Edneer Mutt’s organising committee for celebration of the Keshananada Bharati Judgement's golden jubillee.
