Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said the government is committed to improving and toning up facilities for persons with disabilities, saying the new department for the PwDs will start functioning from the new financial year along with a permanent hostel for the PwDs.
Addressing a programme held at the Gujarati Samaj Education Trust's Special School on Friday to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to extend all necessary help and assistance to the schools run for persons with disabilities.
“Today is the International Day of the Persons with Disabilities. People should understand the importance of the day and how the government, members of the public and parents should work for the PwDs,” he said.
Saying the department of PwDs will start functioning from April 1, 2023, the Chief Minister said the government is serious about ensuring that the PwDs should not lag behind in availing benefits of schemes meant for them.
“We are working 365 days in identifying PwDs right from Pernem to Canacona and to meet their requirements, including how to impart them the necessary skills,” he said, adding that the permanent hostel facility for the PwDs will also take shape in the near future.
Saying the Purple Festival has received accolades from all quarters, the Chief Minister praised and patted Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai on his back for taking a personal interest in looking after the needs and requirements of the PwDs. “I have found no other minister like Phal Desai, who is devoting his time and energy to the welfare of the PwDs. Not just the government and the minister, we all have to look at the PwDs with a positive frame of mind for their betterment,” he said.
Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Director, Ajit Panchwadkar, among others, attended the programme.
