In a move aimed at addressing safety and environmental concerns, the Railways has constructed a retaining wall at Hollant following sustained pressure from local residents and intervention by government representatives.
The issue was first raised by locals through the Velsao panchayat, who pointed to the erosion and threat to nearby properties and farmlands caused by railway activity in the area.
Social worker Roquezinho D’Souza later held a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Cortalim MLA Anton Vas. The chief minister, acknowledging the urgency of the matter, directed railway officials to carry out the necessary work at the earliest.
Construction of the retaining wall has now been completed, bringing relief to several families who were concerned about the lack of structural safeguards along the railway track in Hollant. Locals have welcomed the step, viewing it as a sign that their voices are being heard and acted upon.
Speaking to reporters, D’Souza commended the prompt response of the Railways and the Chief Minister’s office.
However, he also took the opportunity to criticise individuals who had earlier vocally opposed railway expansion projects but eventually accepted compensation and withdrew from the issue.
“These people abandoned the cause halfway, leaving the rest of the community in distress,” he said.
D’Souza urged the public to focus on pragmatic and long-term solutions rather than confrontation.
“Instead of constantly fighting the Railways, we should demand practical amenities like overbridges, underpasses, and retaining walls. These are the developments that will truly benefit our villages,” he added.
The retaining wall is expected to curb erosion and offer better stability to the terrain adjoining the railway tracks, particularly during the monsoon season. Locals hope that this development will pave the way for further improvements in infrastructure and safety measures in the region.
