Taking a stern view of recent incidents of tourist harassment, the Tourism department on Wednesday said it has reinforced safety measures across Goa’s major beaches, including Arambol and Vagator while warning that any misconduct by individuals or establishments will invite strict action.
The move comes after two separate incidents — one involving alleged harassment of foreign women by a group of Indian tourists at Arambol beach, and another at Vagator where bouncers of a local establishment reportedly intimidated a visiting family from Varanasi.
In the second incident, the department has clarified that bouncers are not authorised to handle tourist-related matters and warned of consequences for assault or intimidation.
“We are committed to ensuring that every visitor feels safe and comfortable here. The government will continue to work closely with the police and tourism stakeholders to promote responsible tourism and safeguard Goa’s image as a safe and friendly destination,” Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said.
Earlier, Director General of Police Alok Kumar had stated that anybody including bouncers have no authority to take law in their hands. He had also stated that if a situation goes beyond control, police should be involved for appropriate action.
The club's general manager however denied they began the assault on the tourists stating the latter resorted to violence and abuses.
The department reiterated that tourists are expected to behave responsibly, and all stakeholders must uphold proper conduct at their establishments. It also urged visitors and residents to use the 24×7 Tourism Helpline (1364) to report any misconduct or seek assistance.
Tourism Director Kedar Naik has directed the Tourist police to intensify day and night patrolling, enhance vigilance at key locations, and ensure a swift response to any incident.
