In a shocking incident raising fresh concerns over inmate safety, an undertrial prisoner was brutally assaulted by a group of fellow inmates inside the Central Jail at Colvale on Friday morning.
According to sources, around eight to ten inmates surrounded Mohammed Rehan Sharif, an undertrial prisoner, and beat him up mercilessly with kicks and punches inside the prison premises.
Rehan sustained serious injuries to his face and other parts of his body in the attack. He was immediately shifted to a hospital for treatment.
While being taken for medical attention, Rehan told reporters that the attackers had called him to their section of the jail and then launched the assault without warning.
The exact reason behind the assault and the identities of the assailants are yet to be confirmed.
The incident has once again brought into focus the question of security and surveillance inside the prison, where such attacks are expected to be impossible under constant watch.
Rehan had been arrested by the Goa crime branch in January this year in connection with a drug trafficking case, during which ganja worth Rs 1 lakh was seized from him.
Police and prison officials are expected to launch an inquiry into how the assault occurred within the high-security facility.
