Identity (Asmitai) means the independent existence of Goans, their self-respect, and the feeling of preserving the identity of our community. Goa’s identity is now close to sixty years old. The fact that Goa has remained an independent state is an identity in itself, made possible by the historic opinion poll.
Identity is the feeling of one’s own existence and self-respect. It is expressed through a person’s actions, language, and values, such as Marathi identity or women’s identity. Goa’s identity is not limited to geographical boundaries. It is a unique blend of culture, language, and nature. Several aspects are important for preserving this identity.
The foundation of Goa’s identity lies in the Konkani language. Preserving this language and using it in daily life is the first step towards protecting our identity. However, many of our traditional occupations and businesses are slowly disappearing.
Nature and the environment must be protected. Goa’s beaches, the Sahyadri ranges, and its lush green hills are the State’s real wealth. Protecting them from pollution and uncontrolled mining is essential. We must seriously ask ourselves whether we are taking proper care of our natural surroundings. Goa also has a rich cultural heritage. Its temples, churches, folk music such as Dekhni and Fugdi, and festivals like Shigmo and Carnival reflect the State’s diverse culture.
While preserving the legacy of Goa’s liberation, awareness of the struggle for freedom from Portuguese rule should continue. At the same time, Goa’s autonomy and self-respect must be upheld. The Portuguese rule is part of history, and those days are now over. People should not be made to feel like slaves of the past.
Goan-ness, which stands for harmony, peace, and tolerance among the people of Goa, is the true identity of the State. This identity will be complete only when development goes hand in hand with the protection of Goa’s original culture and nature. Every Goan should have a dignified livelihood, a secure home, opportunities for personal growth, and a happy life. Only then will Goa’s identity grow in its truest sense. Let Goa continue to thrive with its unique Asmitai, where the spirit of Goa Suegudo lives on in the evening fields.
