Accountability in textbook content

The recent row over the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Class 8 textbook chapter on the judiciary raises serious concerns about how school books are prepared. Textbooks shape young minds and must be accurate, balanced and respectful of democratic institutions. Students should learn about issues such as corruption and institutional challenges, but these topics must be presented carefully and based on verified facts.

The move to review the content and fix responsibility is a step in the right direction. However, this incident shows the clear need for stricter editorial checks and proper expert consultation before books are published. Greater transparency in the academic process will help protect both the dignity of institutions and the integrity of education.
