Cleanliness must begin from within, not just through drives

Swachhata hi Seva, a people’s movement…. - The Goan Everyday - September 27, 2025. Very rightly stated, Swachhata hi Seva must become a people’s movement to build a clean, healthy and strong India. Who does not love cleanliness? ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’, it is said. Swachhata events may help to a certain extent. It is good to create awareness regarding cleanliness. Children in school can be taught cleanliness at a young age, yes.

But what about those children who do not get an opportunity to attend school, and what about the uneducated labour class who have never been to school? Look at the streets today and one will find all sorts of trash just strewn all over the place. And not to forget the so-called educated, literate class of people who will not bat an eyelid before throwing their bus tickets or tissues on the road. Cleanliness is something that has to come from within. And of course, cleanliness has to be a coordinated effort.
