Games panchas play to back destructive projects

ARWIN MESQUITA, Colva | 26th August, 07:41 pm

According to a credible Varca activist Shohail Furtado, the Varca extra ordinary gram sabha on August 24 was specially called (after activists petitioning the BDO) to particularly discuss the controversial Raheja Project and large multi dwelling projects. But these points were not discussed, instead the mike turned off abruptly and the meeting ended abruptly (that too not by Sarpanch!) It took about 3 hours just to pass one resolution.  I think anyone can guess what the real intentions of the Varca Sarpanch and Panchas were in this case but it's also important to note, that these type of "games" are "played" in other Panchayats as well (including Colva), by specific corrupt panchas and some supporters attending gram sabhas, so as to help give controversial projects the go ahead. Surely we can say that these panchas do not do it for charity but instead huge "rewards" by the promoters of these destructive projects. I hope that the Varca activists take this panchayat to task and provide an example to other panchayats on how to deal with sarpanchas, panchas who are all out to destroy our villages.
