The recent disclosure in the Pernem twin murder case, in which a Russian national has confessed to multiple killings, including that of an Assamese woman in Arambol, highlights serious lapses in law enforcement.
It is deeply troubling that the Arambol case was initially registered as a natural death and the body handed over to the family without a proper investigation. Such negligence raises uncomfortable questions about the efficiency and seriousness of policing in Goa.
This comes at a time when Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has repeatedly praised the police for a high crime detection rate. However, incidents like this, along with a spate of robberies in Margao, Parra, Verna and Nuvem, tell a different story.
The focus must now shift from self-congratulation and award ceremonies to honest introspection. The Assembly should demand accountability and reforms that lead to real improvements in crime detection and prevention. The people of Goa deserve policing that is vigilant, responsible and capable of ensuring public safety.
