Sewage spill threatens Assagao’s clean image

A homestay complex in Mardungo Ward, Assagao, has a severely overflowing septic tank at its entrance, releasing a foul odour that affects not only nearby residents—including us living directly opposite—but also people passing by. Despite the issue being known to the complex’s owners, no corrective steps have been taken.

The matter has been reported to the village authorities, yet the situation remains unchanged. This poses a serious health hazard, especially during the monsoons when the risk of disease increases. Contaminated sewage water flows across the road and into surrounding fields, polluting the entire area.

Shockingly, this complex is listed on popular platforms like Booking.com and Airbnb. Is this the kind of welcome we want to offer to visitors?

The situation reflects a broader problem affecting many villagers who endure similar unhygienic conditions. We urge the health authorities and the Pollution Control Board to take urgent action. If necessary, the complex should be sealed until proper sanitation is ensured. Assagao, once known as the “village of flowers,” is fast becoming a concrete jungle overrun with stray dogs and neglect.
