Goa is drowning in trash, and the government is doing precious little to solve it. I won’t even go into the Sonsoddo issue but would like to highlight how the pristine paddy fields in the coastal villages are being turned into garbage receptacles by tourists and now, to some extent, by the locals who don’t have a daily waste collection system in place at their building societies/ bungalows.
The worst of the lot are out-of-state visitors who don’t think twice about throwing plastic bags, snack packets, beer bottles, Styrofoam cups, and even diapers out of their moving vehicles into fields and on our beaches.
The village panchayat/state government should install high-definition CCTV cameras at locations with high tourist footfalls and on beach roads so that the culprits can be caught and fined.
