Shabnam Ali case: Delicate situation for authorities

MELVILLE X D'SOUZA, Mumbai | FEBRUARY 20, 2021, 12:42 AM IST

Finally, this case seems to be coming to an end. The woman, Shabnam Ali, who killed 7 of her relatives in Uttar Pradesh, is on the way to be hanged in Mathura jail built some 150 years ago. She is likely to be the first woman to be hanged in Independent India.

Recalling that ghastly incident of 2008, when the woman killed her own family members, could still run a chill down one's spine.

The reason for this massacre -- objection to their relationship. One tends to ask, what is it about love that prompts one to kill even their own kin? Even an educated double-graduate in English & Geography, collaborating with a seventh standard school dropout lover, could commit such an act, is something one cannot fathom.

Perhaps, Love is blind, after all. Justice may have been done after so many years but that cannot bring the dead back to life. And, what happens to her child born in prison, what will be the future of that child?

A delicate situation, surely. Resolving such issues requires more than a court of law. Professionals in the field could strive to bring about some semblance of sanity to young minds.
