As increasing road accidents are raising safety concerns and also as unlicensed and underage drivers are involved in fatal accidents, it is learnt that Goa Police is contemplating writing to the government to ensure that driving license tests are made more stringent than before. This is absolutely necessary in curbing road accidents which are taking place at a disturbing frequency in the State. It would be in the fitness of things to make tests for obtaining the ‘Learning License’ also stringent. There are several drivers of four-wheelers and riders of two-wheelers possessing a ‘Learning License’ seen on the roads who are not accompanied by a person possessing a valid driving license as is mandatory. It would be desirable to have license renewal for senior citizens after two years instead of the normal five-year period. There needs to be restrictions on the renewal of driving licenses for those with a history of alcohol abuse. Those who have been responsible for causing a major road accident also need to undergo stringent tests at the time of renewal of the driving license.
