Ongoing struggles with water shortages and power cuts

Lucas D’Souza, Verna | MAY 17, 2025, 01:07 AM IST

Every single day, people are forced to hold protests and morchas because the authorities continue to ignore basic needs like water and electricity. What we are facing now—dry taps and frequent power cuts—has never happened before. The extreme heat is only making life more difficult. We had hoped that underground cabling would improve the situation, but things have only got worse.

As for the roads, the situation is terrible. Take the stretch from Agnelo Ashram to Nuvem on the old NH 17—half the road is dug up in many places, leaving just enough space for one bus or car to pass. At night, there are no warning lights. This work has been going on for months with no sign it will finish before the monsoon. Why must the common people suffer, while those in power enjoy a comfortable life at the expense of taxpayers?
