ChatGPT: Revolutionising education

After the official launch of ChatGPT in India, India now has its first AI chatbot powered by it. Named Lexi, the chatbot has been launched by financial technology company Velocity and has been integrated into its in-house analytics tool. It is also reported that ChatGPT has passed many high-level exams, including the Wharton MBA Exam, the US Medical Licensing exam, alongside exams in several law classes and the final exam at the Stanford Medical School.

ChatGPT was made available to the public in November 2022 by OpenAI, a non-profit Artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory founded by prominent business moguls like Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and Sam Altman. This technology bot can respond to human inputs in a manner and has the potential to automate many jobs. due to its ability to perform tasks that previously needed human expertise.

Following the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI's valuation was estimated 29 billion in 2023. On February 1, 2023, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Plus, which was available only in the US and is a new and paid version of ChatGPT that aims to improve the AI experience for users during rush hours. The company’s valuation is expected to increase further with the new development.

The ‘GPT’ stands for ‘generative, pre-trained and transformative’ and is a technology that indexes words, phrases, and sentences using statistics, reinforcement learning, and supervised learning. ChatGPT is designed to answer questions and assist users in natural language and is believed to have the potential to revolutionise how we interact with IT tools.

If the functionalities of ChatGPT are utilised well, it could give rise to a seamless academic and learning experience demonstrated by its high utility. This tool has been widely used worldwide and gained popularity quickly.

One of the most fundamental uses of ChatGPT in education is as a question-answering tool. Students could use it to write their assignments; engineers use it to help them write code; compose music, while content creators can generate video scripts. Chat GPT can effectively answer questions, write articles, summarise information, perform other tasks, mimic writing styles, avoid specific conversations, and learn from questions.

With ChatGPT, students can type in their questions and receive an accurate and relevant response within seconds. This would save students time and help them learn more efficiently. It can also be used as an intelligent tutoring system to provide personalised learning experiences to students. By interacting with ChatGPT, students can receive customised feedback on their assignments, ask questions, and get clarifications on topics they are struggling with.

ChatGPT can also assist students with their doubts, irrespective of the subject, complexity, and magnitude. It is powered to provide explanations and solutions in real-time. It can help students better understand the material and build confidence in their abilities while specifically aiding students in preparing for exams.

ChatGPT can provide practice questions, quizzes, and flashcards, allowing students to test their knowledge and identify areas where they need to focus their studies. Instead of just watching pre-recorded videos, students can interact to ask questions, get feedback, and participate in discussions. ChatGPT can also support students by answering admissions, financial aid, and registration questions and can help reduce administrative staff’s workload by providing a quick and efficient response to their queries.

With its ability to understand natural language and answer questions, ChatGPT can provide students with customised learning experiences. It can assist students with writing as it can help students improve their writing skills and communicate their ideas more effectively. This personalised approach can lead to better exam performance and higher grades.

Chat GPT could be used to deliver a speech or writeup, which can be revised by adding or deleting certain things. It can write outlines, poems, letters, advice, cover letters, resumes, and even a blog post for a website. By interacting with ChatGPT, it is possible to receive customised feedback on their assignments, ask questions, and get clarifications on topics they are struggling with. ChatGPT can also provide personalised career guidance to students by analysing their interests and skills and suggesting potential career paths.

ChatGPT can also be used as a virtual tutor to support students who need extra help. It can be used as a virtual teaching assistant to help teachers manage their workload by answering common questions, providing assignment feedback, and facilitating discussions. ChatGPT's ability to understand and generate natural language can be used to develop language learning tools. For example, ChatGPT can provide feedback on grammar and vocabulary, help students practice speaking and listening, and facilitate communication between students and teachers of different languages.

This AI tool could be effectively used by the teaching community as well. The teachers could use the tool to help write emails to parents, create lesson plans and even devise questions and problems. ChatGPT can also be used to deliver online courses more interactively and engagingly. The teaching pedagogy could be made inclusive, giving the learners an engaging experience. Learners would also benefit by receiving instructions from prominent academic institutions worldwide.

Notwithstanding the apparent risk of plagiarism with ChatGPT, students in the West have already started using it to write homework assignments. It is also reported that Chat-GPT will immediately impact jobs such as editors, reporters, analysts, customer service agents, QA engineers, etc. Rough estimates believe that approximately 8% of the 10.3 million open positions will be impacted immediately.

Despite the plausible utility of ChatGPT and its concerns, a national survey in the US has shown that students and teachers have been quick to incorporate this new technology into their everyday lives. ChatGPT is here to stay and will evolve education in many ways.
