While Covid cases have been moving closer to the 1,000-mark in the taluka, the Pernem Covid Care Centre at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium at Sawalwaddo-Pernem, which was to have started around 2 months ago, is yet to be put into operation.

Both BJP MLAs from Pernem, Deputy Chief Minister Babu Ajgaonkar and Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte, had inspected the centre multiple times along with Pernem Deputy Collector Ravishankar Nipanikar, Health Officer Dr Vidhya Parab, PMC Chairperson Shweta Kambli, former PMC chairperson Usha Nagvekar and Councillor Siddhesh Pednekar.

When contacted, Nipanikar said work inside the centre had been completed.

“What is left is appointing health workers. Besides, a discussion is also going on what to do with the waste which would be generated from the centre,” said Nipanikar.

Meanwhile, Pernem Block Congress President of and North Goa Congress General Secretary Umesh Talwanekar criticised the State government for the delay in opening the Pernem Covid Care Centre.

"The government is playing with the lives of people. Covid cases are increasing by the day and the government has failed to control the spread of the virus. Why is Deputy CM Babu Ajgaonkar silent on the delay to inaugurate the Pernem Covid Care Centre,” asked Talwanekar.
