Exits could change AAP narrative

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | 26th April, 12:10 am

The political crisis confronting the Aam Aadmi Party following the exit of party MPs led by Raghav Chadha could compel its Goa leadership to recalibrate its narrative in the state. For, AAP leaders—spearheaded by party supremo Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi Marlena—have consistently targeted the  Congress, accusing it of facilitating defections of its MLAs to the BJP. However, with Chadha and others now joining the BJP after quitting AAP, the party may find it difficult to sustain the same line of attack. This development could force AAP to rethink its messaging in Goa, particularly its criticism of Congress over defections. Any questions?

Cong leaders at zatra fuel poll rumours

The Congress camp has come under renewed focus this week after a group of party leaders gathered in Bardez to attend the Devi Lairai Zatra. The optics of the visit have sparked political chatter. Notably, the leaders—accompanied by a couple of recent entrants believed to be probable candidates—have fuelled speculation that the party may have initiated early groundwork for the 2027 Assembly elections. This has quickly become a talking point both within the Congress and in wider political circles, raising questions about whether the party has begun identifying and grooming prospective candidates well ahead of the electoral battle. Wait and watch.

Reginald hits tough note on Khattar

Amid the chorus of voices condemning the derogatory remarks against St Francis Xavier, Curtorim independent MLA Reginald Lourenco struck a particularly notable note. Strategy or not, he firmly stated that he had not extended support to the saffron dispensation to witness such developments. In fact, he forcefully urged the Chief Minister to act swiftly and curb any emerging communal tendencies in the otherwise peaceful state. The reaction of the saffron brigade to Reginald’s stand, however, remains to be seen. Wait and watch.

Venzy challengers' list growing

How many candidates are gearing up to challenge AAP MLA Venzybab Viegas in his Benaulim stronghold in 2027? The list appears to be growing steadily. Varca strongman Churchill Alemao has repeatedly hinted at entering the fray, while his nephew, Warren Alemao, is actively working to establish his presence in the constituency. There is also speculation that former MLA and Minister Mickky Pacheco may throw his hat into the ring. Adding to the mix, seafarer-turned-Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz is reportedly preparing for his electoral debut, and Congress ZP member Luiza Gomes could also join the contest. Interestingly, sources say that Venzybab has told his aides, “the more, the merrier.”

Khattar's arrest and Venzy's relief

One politician who must have heaved a sigh of relief following Gautam Khattar’s arrest was Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas—though for a different reason. Just ahead of the Spirit of Goa festival in Colva, questions had begun to surface on his home turf about the appropriateness of holding celebrations while Khattar was still at large. Sources say Venzybab was well aware that his opponents could seize on this issue to target him for proceeding with the event. He was spared potential embarrassment when news of Khattar’s detention was announced by the Goa police just in time, before the festival proceeded though on a subdued spirit.
