Politicians could go silent for fortnight from Sept 29

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | SEPTEMBER 23, 2023, 08:30 PM IST

Politicos across the board are expected to lie low from coming week, as the fortnight long Pitru Paksha is commencing from September 29. Politicians across party lines, sources say, prefer to maintain low key during the period of Pitru Paksha. If sources are to be believed, seasoned politicians shun political meetings and interactions, with many even avoiding discussing politics and political strategies during the period. Do not be surprised if the political lot talk politics after October 14 when curtain comes down on the fortnight-long period. Wait and watch.

Who will be BJP's final choice

for South Goa MP's seat?

Will the BJP field a candidate from the cadre for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat, is a question doing the rounds in political circles within the ruling party and outside. For, the party is believed to have shortlisted as many as four candidates, including new comers, Cong-turned-BJP Diggu and Babu Kavlekar, besides party functionary Damubab Naik. Many within the party and outside say that ex-MP Narendrabab Sawaikar is the only candidate amongst the lot who is part of the party cadre. Wait and watch how the saffron brigade goes about finalizing its South Goa candidate.

Cong leaders in South taken

aback by phone call from Diggu

What’s Cong-turned-BJP Margao MLA Diggu up to, is a question asked in Congress circles after a couple of party leaders from down South reportedly receiving courtesy calls from the former Chief Minister. In fact, a couple of Congress leaders have been taken aback when they received a telephonic call from Diggu. Sources said there was no politics behind the Margao MLA’s reported calls to the Congress leaders. Sources say the development assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of reports not ruling out the possibility of the saffron brigade fielding Diggu for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat. Any takers?

All roads led to Damubab's

residence during Chaturthi

BJP leader Damubab Naik played host to a stream of VIPs and other visitors at his residence during the Ganesh festivities. If Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant descended at Damubab’s residence on Friday, Goa governor P S Sreedharan Pillai along with Bihar governor Rajendra Arlekar called on him to extend Ganesh greetings. That’s not all. Party leaders, including Diggu, Babu Kavlekar, ex-MP  Narendrabab Sawaikar too made it to the former MLA’s residence. Margao Municipal Chairperson Damubab Shirodkar with ruling group of City Fathers also descended at his residence to seek blessings of Lord Ganesha.

Churchill in no haste to embrace

NCP (Ajit Pawar) group

Varca strongman Bab Churchill has returned home after a 10-day long annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Vailakanani. He, however, seemed in no hurry to unveil his future political plans. Before heading to Vailankani, Churchillbab had landed in Mumbai for a meeting with the leaders of the Ajit Pawar group of the Nationalist Congress party. In fact, Churchillbab even pointed out that he would take a call on taking his discussions with the NCP (Ajit Pawar) group forward after returning from the Pilgrimage. The former PWD Minister, however, seemed treading a cautious path, not showing any haste to embrace the NCP (Ajit Pawar) group.
