Goa beat Tripura by five wickets in their opening match of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 campaign at Jaipur on Tuesday.
The Goan bowlers, led by spinner Amit Yadav (3-10) and medium pacer Lakshay Garg (2-29) restricted Tripura to 114/8 before chasing down the target with 11 balls to spare. After they elected to bowl first, Goa's high-profile signing -- Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun -- went wicketless on his debut for the State. The left-arm pacer opened the bowling with Garg to produce figures of 0-20 in his three overs.
Chasing the modest total, Goa suffered a top-order collapse as they were reduced 20 for 4 in the seventh over as another star signing, Siddhesh lad (7) fell cheaply after the early exit of openers Aditya Kaushik (3) and Snehal Kauthankar (1). Four-down batsman Suyash Prabhudessai was run out for 6 as Goa struggled in their chase.
Impact substitute Tunish Sawkar (36) then combined with Eknath Kerkar (34 not out) to get Goa back on track. After Sawkar's departure in the fourteenth over, Deepraj Gaonkar (28 not out) joined forces with Kerkar to take Goa home and earn four points.
