Maharashtra emerged champions in the Men’s Team and Junior Girls Team events, Gujarat lifted the Women’s Team title, while Chhattisgarh powered to the Junior Boys Team crown as the Yonex Sunrise West Zone Inter State Badminton Championships 2025 concluded its Team Championship finals at the Indoor Stadium, Campal, on Thursday.
Hosts Goa impressed with fighting performances to bag bronze medals in the Men’s, Women’s and Junior Boys Team events.
In the Men’s Team final, Maharashtra clinched the crown with a 3-1 victory over Chhattisgarh. Varun Kapur went down to Chhattisgarh’s Rounak Chouhan 8-21, 15-21 in the opening singles. Maharashtra bounced back strongly. Darshan Pujari defeated Harshit Thakur 21-15, 21-16, while the doubles pair of Viplav Kuvale and Viraj Kuvale overcame M V Abhishek and Sujey Tamboli 21-11, 18-21, 21-14. In the third singles, Sankalp Gurala sealed the title for Maharashtra with a convincing 21-13, 21-14 win over Harshal Bhoyar.
The Women’s Team final saw Gujarat edge past Maharashtra in a pulsating 3-2 battle. Gujarat’s ace shuttler Tasnim Mir set the tone with a 21-13, 21-12 victory over Saad Dharmadhikari, followed by Adita Rao’s 21-16, 21-17 win against Purva Barve. Maharashtra fought back through Anagha Karandikar and Siya Singh, who defeated Shenan Christian and Yuti Gajjar 21-16, 21-10, while Tanishka Deshpande levelled the tie with a 21-14, 21-16 win over Aishani Tiwari. However, the Gujarat pair of Adita Rao and Tasnim Mir held their nerve in the final doubles, beating Shruti Mundada and Tanishka Deshpande 21-18, 21-14 to give Gujarat the championship.
In the Junior Boys’ Team final, Chhattisgarh outplayed Maharashtra 2-0. Star shuttler Rounak Chouhan prevailed over India’s No.1 U17 player Dev Ruparelia in a thrilling three-setter 21-16, 19-21, 21-17, before the doubles duo of Divyansh Agrawal and Saurav Sahu sealed the win with a 21-17, 21-12 triumph over Arjun Birajdar and Aryan Birajdar.
The Junior Girls’ Team final saw Maharashtra defeat Chhattisgarh 2-1 in a close contest. Chhattisgarh drew first blood with Tanoo Chandra overcoming Ridheema Sarpate 21-11, 21-7, but Maharashtra roared back when Shravani Walekar and Taarini Suri combined to beat Shweta Pardeshi and Tanoo Chandra 21-16, 21-17. In the decider, Prakriti Sharma produced a gritty performance to defeat Renushri Shyamalarao Yavarna 21-16, 19-21, 21-17, handing Maharashtra the Junior Girls’ crown.
The prestigious championships has been organised by the Goa Badminton Association in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa, bringing together the finest shuttlers from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and hosts Goa in a spectacular showcase of talent.
