Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club emerged victorious in an intense final, claiming the trophy for the 32nd Super Soccer played in memory of Joao Francis Fernandes by edging out Maina SC Curtorim in a thrilling tiebreaker 10-9 at St John the Baptist ground Benaulim on Sunday.
The match saw an early goal from Joywin of Curtorim in the 15th minute quickly equalised by Areal's Alister Monteiro in the 24th minute, ending the first half 1-1.
In the second half, both teams battled for possession in the midfield, resulting in a tight and strategic contest. Eventually, the tiebreaker was needed to determine the winner, with Areal displaying composure to clinch the title.
The event was graced by Fr Simpliciano Fernandes, parish priest of Our Lady of Merces Church, Colva as the chief guest, who gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of other dignitaries. Sao Jose de Areal won a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with the trophy. Maina SC Curtorim received Rs 40,000 in cash and a trophy for their runners-up finish.
