A true Mapusa icon, Café St. Francis Xavier is not just about food—it’s about the timeless connections that make it feel like home. The Goan explores the heart and heritage of Café St. Francis Xavier which makes it a community landmark
In the bustling heart of Mapusa’s municipal market, Café St. Francis Xavier has been a cherished gathering spot since 1961, a place where time-honoured flavours, familiar faces, and warm memories come together. For generations, the Sequeira family has poured their love and devotion into this café, creating a home away from home for locals and visitors alike.
Humble beginnings
Diego Sequeira, who now runs the café, shares its heartfelt origin: “My grandfather’s love for food and his skill in baking inspired him to open this café. He had a dream of bringing people together over food, and that’s what Café St. Francis Xavier has always been about.” Starting from humble roots in the old Mapusa market, the café eventually moved to its current location in 1961, preserving its charm and traditions along the way.
Taste of tradition
The café’s menu is steeped in authenticity, serving Goan delicacies that keep people coming back, year after year. Diego smiles as he talks about the iconic puffs, croquettes, and beef samosas that are customer favourites. “These snacks mean so much to people. They remind them of home, of simpler times,” he says. And while the menu has grown to include items like fresh fruit juices, draught beers, and hard liquor, Diego assures that the soul of Café St. Francis Xavier remains the same. “It’s a place where people can take a break, have a laugh, and make memories.”
The café’s warmth
But what truly sets this café apart is the warmth and sense of family that radiates through every interaction. Diego believes this atmosphere keeps people returning, sometimes just to say hello. “Our café is unique because it’s more than a business—it’s a tradition, a piece of people’s lives,” he says. For many, it’s a gathering place as familiar as their own living room, a sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle of the market.
All-round loyalty
The loyalty within the café extends to the staff as well. Many have been working with the Sequeira family for decades, sharing in the café’s legacy. “We’re like one big family here,” Diego reflects. “Our team feels secure, appreciated, and part of something meaningful. It’s their dedication and kindness that make the café what it is.” For customers like Celine from Mapusa, the connection is personal. She remembers how her late brother, Peter, would make Café St. Francis Xavier his first stop whenever he returned from the UK. “He’d be there, rain or shine, chatting with the staff and familiar faces, bringing home bags of croquettes and samosas. It was his tradition, his way of reconnecting with home.”
Part of life’s moments
The café has also been a part of life’s significant moments. Anna from Calangute shares her own memory: “My husband and I met each other’s families for the first time here. Café Xavier was where our two families connected, and we felt that sense of belonging that everyone speaks of. It’s like home.”
Tradition and vision
As the Sequeira family continues to expand their legacy with bakery outlets and wedding venues, they remain deeply committed to Café St. Francis Xavier, the heart of their family story. Diego’s sons, Dillon and Lindell, bring fresh ideas to the café, balancing innovation with the cherished traditions passed down through generations. Diego encourages his sons to stay true to what makes the café special: “Dedication, self-motivation, and always welcoming your customers with warmth.”
A place of comfort
Looking toward the future, Diego hopes the café will always be a place where people come for comfort and connection. “It’s not just about the food. It’s about the memories, the laughter, the feeling of being part of something lasting,” he says.
Through every bite, every smile, and every moment shared, Café St. Francis Xavier has become more than just a café—it’s a living piece of Mapusa’s heart.
