Following Laxman’s passing in 1956, his son, Hanuman Nadodkar, took the reins. For more than four decades, Hanuman continued his father’s work, ensuring that the restaurant remained true to its original ethos. In 2000, the torch was passed to Raju and his brother Nilesh, who have since carried on the family tradition. “My father believed in consistency,” says Raju Nadodkar, Laxman’s grandson and one of the current owners. “He wanted every dish to taste the same, no matter who made it or when it was served. That’s what kept people coming back.”

Commitment to quality

Despite the influx of new restaurants and modern culinary trends, Hotel Vijay Hanuman has remained steadfast in its commitment to serving the local community. “We’ve seen a lot of changes in Mapusa over the years,” Raju reflects, “but what hasn’t changed is our focus on quality and our connection with our customers.”

Traditional offerings

The menu at Hotel Vijay Hanuman, though it has seen minor tweaks, largely remains a tribute to its roots. From early morning until evening, the kitchen buzzes with the preparation of beloved dishes like samosas, batata wadas, sweet buns, and various types of bhajis. These offerings, perfected over decades, continue to delight customers who return day after day, year after year.

Community centric

What truly sets Hotel Vijay Hanuman apart is its deep connection to the community. The restaurant caters primarily to a local crowd—99% of its patrons are familiar faces, many of whom have been dining there for decades. This loyalty is a testament not only to the quality of the food but also to the warm, welcoming atmosphere that the Nadodkar family has cultivated over the years. “It’s not just about the food,” Raju explains. “It’s about the relationships we’ve built with our customers. They’re like family to us.”

For the Nadodkar family, consistency is more than just maintaining a menu; it’s about preserving a legacy. The familiarity and comfort that the food provides have made Hotel Vijay Hanuman a second home for many. Long-time customers often share fond memories of meals enjoyed and moments celebrated within its walls. “We’ve had customers who started coming here as children and now bring their own kids,” Raju says with pride. “That’s what makes this place special.”
