Irregular water and power supply a major problem in Porvorim
Independent MLA, Rohan Khaunte’s dream is to regularise allslum dwellings that came up before 2000, in all the three panchayats ofPorvorim.
The young first-time MLA of the newly carved constituency ofPorvorim is not sure about completing infrastructure projects as promised, buthe is confident that he can regularise all houses in the slums by end of 2013.
“With the present financial condition of the state it isvery difficult to complete all major infrastructure projects. However, I amquite confident that my dream to regularise all slum dwellings would befulfilled by end of 2013,” Khaunte said.
He promised to give his best to his constituents, bydevoting time to fulfill his vision document within five years and has plans tomake Porvorim a model constituency in the State.
Porvorim has been carved out from the old Aldonaconstituency and comprises of only three village panchayats – Socorro, Penha deFranca (Britona) and Salvador do Mundo.
Basic facilities like irregular water and power supply hasbeen the bane of the Porvorim people, in the three panchayats comprising theconstituency, for the last two decades.
“If my predecessor could do at least 10 percent of his workefficiently, then Porvorim would have been a model constituency by now. I havedecided to be transparent so that people oriented development would be realityand my report card of one year’s tenure speaks for itself,” the MLA admitted.
Porvorim, which borders the capital city of Panjim is fastgrowing into a major town. People livingon Porvorim plateau area face an acute shortage of water. Like any major townin the state, treating and disposing garbage is turning out to be a huge taskfor people residing in the area. The constituency also requires a sewerageline, proper roads and footpaths and a market building.
People residing below the plateau face the major issue ofpoor power supply, besides no proper roads and the lack of infrastructurefacilities. The MLA has promised to build a panchayat ghar cum multipurposehall in Salvador do Mundo as well as Socorro. He also plans to build acommunity health centre at housing board and a new market complex with groundplus 2 structure.
According to Khaunte, a sewerage line and community cum townhall is at the top of his list. He also plans to construct bus bays and busshelters at various points, including the much busy O’ Coqueiro junction.
