MAPUSA
Former councillor and North Goa District BJP Vice President Franky Carvalho suffered another setback after his attempt to get the rival candidate’s nomination rejected fizzled out after the Returning Officer dismissed the objection raised.
Carvalho through his proxy candidate Santosh Korgaonkar raised an objection during the scrutiny of nomination papers on Friday claiming that Tarak Arolkar had fraudulently obtained OBC certificate by annexing a false and fabricated birth certificate of his late father Manguesh Arolkar.
Tarak Arolkar had filed his nomination from Ward 7, which is reserved for OBC general for the election of Mapusa Municipal Council.
Arolkar faced some anxious moments as arguments between his lawyer and that of the opposition lasted for more than an hour, which was finally decided in his favour.
“Objection was filed against Tarak Arolkar by another candidate. We have heard the objection and proceeded with the hearing. I have dismissed the objection and Arolkar’s candidacy has been accepted,” said Mamu Hage, Returning Officer for Mapusa civic elections.
It may be recalled the Deputy Collector of Bardez Kapil Phadte had rejected Carvalho’s caste certificate on Thursday.
According to the deputy collector, the Traditional Fishermen’s Association of North Goa that had issued the former councillor a ‘Catholic Kharvi’ community certificate had failed to renew its registration and therefore the certificate issued was “under cloud of suspicion”.
He also said the documents and documentary evidence provided by the former councillor could not establish his parental lineage.
In the meanwhile, after scrutiny the Returning Officer found 95 validly nominated candidates for the Mapusa Municipal Council elections.
“Two nominations were rejected and 95 forms were accepted,” Hage said.
One nomination was rejected for non-production of OBC certificate and the second for not fulfilling age criteria as the candidate was found less than 21 years of age.
PANAJI: After the scrutiny of nominations on Friday and rejection of 3 nominations, 451 candidates remained in the fray for elections to five municipal councils.

MARGAO: All the 115 nomination papers filed by candidates for the Margao Municipal Council election were found in order at the time of scrutiny.
Returning Officer, Jyoti Kumari informed that all the 115 candidate, who had filed their nomination papers for the polls, were found in order.
Saturday is the date for withdrawal of nomination papers.
Given that a group of Congress workers have filed their nomination papers as Independent candidates in the ensuing polls, all eyes are focused on the Congress party whether the party leadership will step in to get their candidature withdrawn from the fray.
