Days after a severe water contamination crisis at a residential complex in Dabolim, where over 160 residents were affected by diarrhoea, fuel contamination was detected at the well at Our Lady of Health Church in Sancoale, raising serious health and environmental concerns in the area. What began as a suspicious odour emanating from the well quickly escalated into something more serious because it is a primary source of water for drinking and gardening.

The parish priest disclosed that the effects of water contamination were felt over the past fortnight, as the taste of water altered and also fruits from the church garden began falling prematurely before ripening. Such signs point to possible chemical or fuel contamination that could impact not only the local ecosystem but also those relying on this water for daily use. The community’s immediate concern was justified, especially when a simple water test revealed the presence of fuel—an alarming indicator of either an environmental breach or foul play.

The quick mobilisation of authorities, including fire services, pollution control officials, and police, reflects the seriousness of the situation. Initial steps of collecting water samples for analysis, inspecting nearby water bodies and examining storage tanks and fuel lines in the area are positive steps. A big relief is the fact that officials have ruled out the possibility of a direct linkage to any fuel pipeline. However, with no indication on the source of contamination, the authorities will have to continue digging deep.

On Tuesday, officials pumped out five barrels of fuel-contaminated water, and this marks a critical step in managing the crisis. The question is whether the pumping has cleared the contamination. Removing the polluted water reduces immediate health risks and prevents further seepage into the groundwater or the surrounding environment. But that will not be the end of the issue. If the contamination persists, there could be some serious problems to deal with. Also, disposing of the drawn water could be another hiccup that authorities will face.

Beyond immediate remediation, this contamination incident serves as a wake-up call. Fuel leaks, if left unchecked, can have devastating long-term impacts on groundwater and public health. It emphasises the need for community awareness and proactive measures to detect and respond to environmental hazards early.
