Dhargal acid attack: Need to introspect

| JUNE 30, 2025, 11:39 PM IST

Monday's horrific acid attack on a 17-year-old boy at Dhargal brings to the fore critical questions, not just a mere reflection of a decline in law and order, but more especially an utter lack of respect and fear for law enforcement. This brutal and audacious incident raises key concerns about public safety, the effectiveness of preventive measures, if at all there are any, and the societal foundations that harbour anger, intolerance, hate and vengeance among people.

Here is what happened according to reports. The teenager was standing by the bus stop along the Dhargal highway on his way to college when a rider on a scooter, wearing a raincoat and gloves, suddenly halted, splashed acid on him, and swiftly escaped. The attack inflicted severe burns on the young boy and caused critical injuries to his body including eye and cheek.

Such a fearless act of violence, executed in daylight on a busy road, is not merely a personal tragedy but indicative of a larger systemic failure. Acid attacks have alarmingly become more frequent across India despite existing legal measures against them. Moreover, the easy access to concentrated acid in Goa, makes it even more scary.

The societal repercussions of such incidents are huge. They create fear, particularly among women and minors, who are disproportionately affected by violence, and set a disturbing trend where violence seems to be increasingly accepted as a means to settle scores. When criminals operate with blatant disregard for the law, lacking the fear of justice, it undermines public trust and creates an atmosphere of insecurity, making daily life perilous.

This incident also emphasizes the critical necessity for preventative strategies and enhanced surveillance. Thankfully, the police swung into action and zeroed down on the accused in quick time. But what about CCTV surveillance, which would have acted as a deterrent besides going a long way in swiftly nabbing the culprit?  The State security system will always remain flawed if we cannot keep pace with technology in detecting crime. Such deficiencies are not merely bureaucratic mistakes but primary failures that facilitate the occurrence of crimes and permit them to remain unresolved for extended periods.

Lastly, the incident also sheds light on societal perspectives regarding justice and punishment. The confession by the accused that the attack was motivated by personal vengeance indicates a cycle of violence stemming from emotional conflicts. There may be little the police could do on this count, but the larger question here is personal vendettas resulting in atrocious acts. This inquiry prompts a reflection on the societal and psychological factors that cultivate violence, and whether the system is equipped to effectively tackle the underlying issues. Moreover, this incident urges a wider societal reflection. Are we adequately addressing the social conditions that lead to violence? Are support systems in place for victims and their families? How can community involvement and education contribute to preventing such crimes? These are critical questions that policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and civil society must address.

The acid attack signifies more than just a criminal act; it serves as a reflection of the fragility of our social order and the shortcomings in our preventive measures. It calls for immediate all-round action of enhancing legal frameworks, refining police infrastructures, and nurturing a peaceful societal atmosphere. Without decisive measures, such heinous acts threaten to become an unsettling norm, eroding the harmony that has been the bedrock of Goan society.
