Even as the Mandur bridge project is turning into a white elephant, Prof Ramrao Wagh has suggested that the same could be put to use for an eco-tourism project.

Wagh informed The Goan that he has already submitted a plan to the Agriculture Department in which he has proposed that an area of around 2 kms could be converted into an eco-tourism project where the traditional methods of khazan farming could be set up.

“In this project, khazan farming is proposed alongside the traditional fishing methods which were employed more than 2000 years back. The government only needs to build protective bundhs around the project through the age-old methods,” Wagh said while adding that the government, through the Tourism Department, can then promote it among the nature-loving tourists.

Meanwhile, Wagh also raised the issue of non-compensation of the farmers who lost their land for the bridge project.

“The farmers who sacrificed their land for the project have yet to be compensated and the total compensation works to over Rs 1 crore,” Wagh said and urged the government to pay the compensation money at the earliest.
