The Goan tradition of ‘Kazarachem Jevonn’ (wedding meal) was recently showcased at a unique function at The Dandelions Pub, Whitton Road Hounslow, West London, on November 23 from 12 noon to about 6 pm.
The organiser, Albano Fernandes, said he was keen to organise the function to recreate and keep alive Goan traditions and culture, which is fading out among the present generation of Goans.
“This ‘Kazarachem Jevonn’ was attended by over 80 Goans, including Goans of the East African community, from different parts of the UK, Goan Community representatives from Southampton, Reading, Swindon, Kent, London, and a few English guests who are Goan food lovers,” said Albano.
The event began with a Konkani grace before meals recited by Andrew Martins of Swindon.
Noted RJ Roque Vaz then introduced the various traditions and highlighted the significance of the various aspects of the ‘Kazarachem Jevonn’.
Those present at the event were served with dishes like Ukdem Xitt, Samariachi kodi, Choniacho Melgor, Dudi Bhaji, Pork Vindaloo, Ukodlolim Sungtam, Panant bazlolo Bangdo, Torr and Vonn for Dessert.
“As part of the dress code, guests were invited to be attired in outfits from the 1970s. The plan was to create a similar scene what Goans did in the past during Traditional food gatherings with music, dance and games,” explained Albano.
All ingredients for the ‘Kazarachem Jevonn’ were imported from Goa, along with a wedding catering specialist, Chef Petsy, who flew in from Vasco specially for the Event. Among others in the kitchen were Head Chef Jose Fernandes, and his Goan team. The Bar was managed by Elsy, Lucas, Valy and others.
Other activities demonstrated included a talk on the traditional Roce ceremony, as well as an imaginary Groom’s entourage from Swindon and Southampton, with the bride’s entourage from various parts of London.
A card game of Mendikot between Bardez and Salcette was part of the activities in which Salcette won. Free housie game and the ‘Tap Dance’ were also included in the event. Goa's Black Rose tea was served during tea time. The main act for the Event was noted singer 'Polly de Curtorim' who thrilled the crowd with Konkani and English Songs of the 70-80's.
Goa’s popular singer and composer Young Perry released a special composition tune for this occasion, ‘Kazarachem Jevonn’, which was well appreciated. Other supporting singers included Boris Fernandes of Aldona and Mr.Savio Tino Sequeira who entertained the gathering during breaks.
Popular Goan RJ Roque Vaz of the Konkani radio show ‘Konkani Uloi London Fuloi’ compered the show, while the sponsors included Calsan Builders, Goan Delicacy, Hounslow, Valanka Goan Snack Corner, Southall, and Zivac International, Hounslow.
A young Goan couple celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary, and Jose Noronha, a popular social worker from Southall, raised the toast with Goa’s unique liquor, cashew feni, using the traditional small glass (Cupin).
While Goans entertained themselves with this special function at The Dandelions Pub, the other non-Goan customers watched and were entertained by the Goans. The Event was documented on You Tube by Goa Channel UK.
