Goan community in Karachi venerates St Francis Xavier

KARACHI

Members of the Catholic community in Karachi celebrated the Feast of St Francis Xavier, fondly known as Goencho Saib, with a Solemn High Mass organised by the Goinkars’ Own Academy (G.O.A.) at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Karachi, on December 3.

The Eucharistic Celebration began with the recitation of the Rosary. The introductory and concluding prayers were offered in both Konkani and English.

St Patrick’s Cathedral was filled to its maximum capacity during the Feast Mass which was concelebrated by Fr Mario Rodrigues, assisted by Fr Robinson Samuel, Fr Shakeel Gulzar and Deacon Joshua.

In his homily, Fr Rodrigues, highlighted the remarkable virtues that shaped the life of the Saint and said St Francis’s life is a testimony to the power of God’s will, the strength of optimism, and the perseverance of faith.

“Francis Xavier was a man of hope. He always saw the positive in situations, even when faced with hardship, rejection, or danger. His optimism gave him strength to endure the long journeys, the cultural challenges and the criticisms he faced,” said Fr Rodrigues.

“Because of his joyful spirit, he was able to evangelise tirelessly and today many of us owe our faith to his mission. We too must learn to see the good in life. In a world often filled with negativity, pessimism, and despair, St Francis calls us to be people of hope.”

A notable highlight of the Eucharistic Celebration was the musical contribution of the Konkani and English choirs from St Patrick’s and St Anthony’s Parishes led by Bella Coelho and Aloysius Soares, along with musicians, including Pierina Pereira (keyboard), Farooq Suleman and 14-year-old Russell Fernandes (violins).

The readings were proclaimed by Rita Valliani in Konkani and Valerie Nicholas in English, the prayers of the faithful by Valerio Pereira in Konkani and Joseph Cairo in English. This multilingual celebration reflected the diversity of the Catholic community in Karachi symbolising a unity of faith that transcends language.

Following the Eucharistic Celebration, a vote of thanks was offered by G.O.A. President Peter Mendes, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, parishioners, pilgrims, and committee members for their presence and support in honouring the Feast of St Francis Xavier.

He also appreciated Kenneth Chu and his wife of ‘Ming Court’ for generously offering refreshments to all those present at the celebration.

The event was a success, showcasing the unity, diversity, and spiritual devotion of the Goan Catholic community in Karachi. It underscored the strength of collective effort and the impact of selfless dedication in creating meaningful moments of faith and fellowship.

The Goinkars’ Own Academy was appreciated for organising an event that not only celebrated the Feast of St Francis Xavier, but also strengthened the bonds within the community in Karachi.
