Goans celebrate Carnival in Delhi

NEW DELHI

Fun, frolic, music and colourful attire marked the Carnival festivities in Delhi, as the Goan community celebrated their tradition in the national capital on February 11.

The Goan Sports and Cultural Club (GSCC), which is engaged in promoting football and Goan culture in Delhi, organised a Carnival celebration in its Clubhouse. The hall, which was decorated with flower cutouts, tinsel and colourful pennant banners, was filled with guests dressed in carnival attire complete with masks, caps and colourful costumes.

“The day commenced with a Holy Mass in English. The choir ended the Mass with the popular Konkani hymn “Pao Maie” which was joined by most of the congregation,” said GSCC President Alex Fernandes.

“After a delicious breakfast, Joseph Noronha (GSCC executive member) dressed in royal attire as King Momo declared the celebrations open and led the Carnival parade around the clubhouse with Goan music in the background.”

Fernandes warmly welcomed all guests and expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the enthusiasm shown by them for turning out in the true carnival spirit. He also thanked his dedicated team for their untiring efforts in organising the club activities.

“The festively dressed participants showcased their costumes and talents before a colourfully decorated backdrop. Prizes were awarded to Margaret Dorairaj (best dressed lady) and Fabian Dsouza (best dressed gent),” said Fernandes.

The emcees Ezekiel Fernandes (GSCC Vice President) and Deanne Fernandes (GSCC Executive member) kept the crowd on their feet with various games and fun activities. There was a game of tambola, in which the whole crowd participated with great enthusiasm and enjoyed immensely.

“A sumptuous lunch was served, which included the Goan delicacies chicken xacuti and pork vindaloo, which are quite a rarity in Delhi,” said Alex Fernandes.

“The celebrations ended with everyone carrying back memories of Goa with them and hoping to celebrate more functions with their fellow Goans. The Goan Sports and Cultural Club will continue to strive to keep the spirit of Goa alive in every Goan in Delhi,” he added.
