A fine arts photography exhibition, ‘Sacred Spaces – Moments in Time’ displaying paintings and altars in Churches of Goa, will be inaugurated at Quadro Art Gallery, Porvorim on August 29 by Canon Alfred Vaz. The exhibition will display the work of self-taught fine arts photographer Payal Kakkar who has spent more than two years photographing 70 plus churches in Goa. Giving a new dimension to architecture in the genre of documentary, the highly detailed and lyrical quality images reveal the true essence of the designs. The exhibition will remain open to the public from 11 am to 6 pm till September 4.
“I am drawn to architectural spaces where history seems to seep through its bones,” says Payal, whose photos reveal the soul of the structures and the impact of the passage of time and experience have witnessed empires grow and fall. Her works evoke an emotional response and create a ‘moment in time’ where time stood still. Her photographic work is shaped by her background as a dancer. She has mastered the art of playing with a sense of three-dimensional and two-dimensional elements to create a composition that is both abstract and realistic.
Payal’s last exhibition in Goa ‘Ecclesiastical Goa: 16th and 17th Century Churches’ was inaugurated by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao at The Church of Francis of Assisi, Old Goa in December 2018 and was much appreciated. She had given a presentation in Goa Arts and Literature Festival, 2018 too and participated in GAAF’ 19 at Museum of Goa (MoG), too.
