MARGAO: Mathew XI, Assolda registered a solitary goal win over Varca Footballers to move to the quarter-finals of Our Lady of Fatima Cup, at Our Lady Of Fatima Sports and Cultural club ground, Baida, Chinchinim.
In the first half, Richard of Mathew XI, Assolda dribbled past the defenders and got a chance to take the lead but the rival keeper Mohammad Shaikh pushed the ball for a corner. Welson Fernandes gave the lead for Mathew XI with a strong header from the corner kick in the ninth minute. Soon, Victorino Fernandes had a good chance to double the lead but Mohammad brilliantly collected the ball in the 10th minute.
Patraj of Varca Footballers missed a good chance to equalise the goal with a header in the 16th minute. Laden Mendonca took a powerful shot but the rival keeper pushed the ball for the corner in the 19th minute.
In the second half, Welson Fernandes missed an easy to score a brace but shot wide in the 36th minute. Coloman Noronha of Varca Footballers had a good chance to equalise but shot wide.
