VASCO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Thursday inaugurated the bust of Lt Narendra Mayekar at the renovated Smarak Sthal, developed under MLA-LAD funds. Residents, the martyr’s family, and serving and retired defence personnel attended the ceremony.
Lt Mayekar’s family stood beside the bust as tributes were paid to the brave son of Sada. Amonkar announced that a road in Sada would be named after him to keep his memory alive. He also said he would propose that the annual homage programme be declared an official government function.
Lt Mayekar, a posthumous Kirti Chakra awardee, was martyred on February 26, 2000, during Operation Rhino in Assam while fighting ULFA militants.
