The ongoing anti-mega housing stir in the Curtorim village – known as the granary of Salcete, took an unprecedented turn, with local residents displaying a banner right on the Curtorim Panchayat Ghar warning builders and land owners that they would invest in Curtorim at their own risk.

A day after gram sabha members extended their support to the anti-mega housing movement, gram sabha member Moreno Rebello and others put up the banner at the Panchayat Ghar on Monday.

He said the message via the banner is loud and clear that Curtorkars will not allow any more mega housing projects in the village and that builders and land owners will invest in Curtorim at their own risk.

“We have put up the banner right in front of the panchayat ghar for the benefit of those who put their files for construction projects. They have to now decide whether they should go ahead with their projects or not since Curtorkars will go to any extent now to stop all mega housing projects in the village,” he asserted.

He added: “Other than individual houses and bungalows, the resolution adopted at the Sunday gram sabha is clear, no more mega housing or multi-dwelling units in Curtorim village.”

In order to take the anti-mega housing projects forward, Moreno has called up the people across the State to put up similar banners and boards to caution builders and real estate developers that mega housing projects are not welcome in their respective villages. “The time has now come for the people across the State to coordinate and form a network to oppose mega housing projects,” he added.

Residents of Curtorim have been waging a sustained battle against mega housing projects over the last several months.
