The Goa Apprenticeship Scheme, a clone of a similar scheme being implemented by the Central government, has been gaining steam with over 13,000 currently undergoing training both in the government as well as private sector, a top official has said.
In the current year, nearly 5,000 have successfully completed their apprenticeship training and another 13,000-odd are still undergoing the training.
The official also said that nearly 5,000 of these apprentices will be deployed in government departments appropriate to their skills.
"They will also be at an advantage, having undergone the training, in landing respectable jobs in the private sector as well," the top official of the Department for Skill Development said.
The scheme is a clone developed by the State government on the lines of a similar Apprenticeship Scheme launched by the Central government in a bid to develop skilled manpower and also create a platform for lateral intake in the private sector.
By tying up with several private companies to implement this 'apprenticeship training scheme' the State government aimed to utilise the existing infrastructure available in the private sector as well.
Throughout the duration of the apprenticeship programme, the trainees are also paid a stipend.
Meanwhile, of the total, 13,300 undergoing the training, as many as 8,000 are being trained in private sector organisations and some 5,000-odd are honing their skills in government departments and institutions.
According to the official, over 4,000 have successfully completed their training in 2024-25. He added that nearly 5,000 positions in government departments and autonomous corporations and institutions will be reserved for these youth.
In future too, apprentices who complete the apprenticeship training under this State government scheme will also get the benefit of posts being reserved for them, the official added.
