Inspector General of Police, Omvir Singh (IPS) conducted a surprise raid at the Central jail in Colvale and during a search operation seized eight mobile phones and other electronic items from the jail inmates.
Singh who holds the charge of Prisons warned that any sort of illegal activities will not be tolerated in future and directed the jail staff to maintain strict vigil to curb such unauthorised activities in the jail.
The IGP Prisons conducted the sudden raid on Sunday afternoon along with the Colvale Police and the police officers attached to the Indian Reserve Battalion.
He conducted a search in various blocks/cells in the jail and found eight cell phones, chargers and headphones of different make, speaker and other contraband articles in possession of the prisoners.
All the articles were seized by the raiding team as per the jail manual.
Although no cases have been registered, the authorities are expected to conduct an internal inquiry in the matter.
The IGP Prisons has also directed the jail staff to refrain from immoral activities and warned them of strict action.
Singh, who has served as IGP Prison in Chandigarh in the past has vast experience in jail security and administration.
Two months ago, the then IGP Bosco George in a similar surprise search operation inside the prison premises had seized 12 mobile sets and other electronic gadgets.
In the past drugs, liquor bottles and cigarettes were also found in the jail. Fights among the inmates had also become a routine inside the Colvale jail.
