MARGAO
Will the 10-ton gasification waste treatment plant meet the requirements of the Margao Municipal Council when the waste generated in the commercial capital is pegged around 50 tons – approximately 30 tons wet garbage and 20-odd tons dry waste?
Or, will the MMC go in for the 10-ton gasification plant to handle the mixed waste generated at the city’s black spots and set up another plant to handle the 30-ton wet waste generated in the city? And, whether the MMC can afford to set up two plants given the resource crunch staring at the civic body?
These and other questions indeed remain unanswered. For, the Margao Municipal Council is presently transporting approximately 30 ton wet waste from Sonsodo to the Cacora waste treatment plant at Curchorem, incurring an annual expenditure amounting to Rs 1.5 crore towards transportation. An opposition Municipal councillor cautioned that the civic body should not rush with the proposal. “The civic body should opt for a plant which could cater to its requirements. Since the civic body has a bitter experience with previous technologies, care should be taken to adopt the technology that meets the city’s requirements”, the councillor added.
