Doctor duo, karate black belt, industrialist and ex-Navyman: A look at South Goa candidates

Two doctors, an industrialist, a Black Belt in karate, and an ex-Navy Captain are among the eight candidates in the fray for the May 7 polls for the South Goa Lok Sabha constituency.

Bahujan Samaj Party’s candidate Dr Shweta Gaonkar and Independent candidate Dr Kalidas Vaingankar are both doctors. Dr Shweta Gaonkar has a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, besides a Diploma in Anaesthesia from the Goa Medical College.

Dr Kalidas is an MBBS as well with a degree from Goa Medical College in 2005 and is an Associate Fellow of Industrial Health, Institute of Safety, Occupational Health and Environment, Altinho, 2015.

On the other hand, BJP candidate Pallavi Dempo completed her post-graduation in Business Management from MIT, Pune University in 1997. Congress candidate, Capt Viriato Fernandes is a Bachelor of Engineering from Goa University and has a specialisation in Marine Engineering from INS Shivaji, Lonavla and Air Engineering Specialization, Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology, in 1995.

Independent candidate Alexy Fernandes, a resident of Amona-Qupem, is a 49-year-old Black Belt in Karate. Meanwhile, Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) candidate Rubert Pereira passed SSC from Our Lady of Snows, Raia in 2000 and later completed Higher Secondary School in 2002 and ITI (electrical) in 2005.

Fifty-four-year-old Harishchandra Sudhakar Naik, contesting on the Corruption Abolition Party ticket is a resident of Madkai and a BSc graduate in Chemistry from PES College, Ponda in 1993.
